Thomas Bevan 1887

Henry Griffiths returned home from work to his house at 57 Henry Street in Crewe to find his wife lying dead on the floor, and his 9 year old niece lying unconscious beside her. When the niece, Mary Jones, became conscious briefly, a few days later, she gave police a statement, and shortly after Thomas Bevan was arrested and tried for the crime. Eighteen shillings had been stolen from the house, and a poker bent in the attack. It appears he was caught in the act of stealing from his aunt’s purse, and killed her, and when Mary Jones came in, he attempted to murder her also.
Hanged by Berry, on 1th August at Knutsford, the prisoner weighed just 8 stone 9 pounds, and was given a drop of six feet.
